I lost my college deferment because I had been at a two-year junior college for five semesters, and I had a low lottery number.
I was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 22, 1970. I married my first wife on December 20, 1970.
I did Basic Training and AIT at Fort Ord, California. Next stop – March 1971 – Vietnam with a 11B MOS (infantry).
Upon arriving in Nam, we were processed through the 90th Replacement Center. The 90th is where everyone processed into and out of the country. The 90th was just outside Saigon, adjacent to Long Binh Post (Army base). After spending a week in the 90th, I was among 35 guys who were sent to MP school. It was a week-long school. I then received orders assigning me to the 8th MP group (CI) of the 18th MP Brigade on Long Binh Post. CI stands for Criminal Investigation, and I was a clerk. My job was to assemble evidence into files to prepare for Court Marshal.
In July, I came home on two-week leave. In September, my daughter was born.
I served in my capacity in CID for ten months and one week before returning home and getting out of the Army through an early-out program Nixon implemented to reduce troop strength. I was discharged January 30, 1972.
This is my 13th year with the NVAR. I did my first NVAR in 2010.
